Anatomy of a good pick – Age

This is the first of a series of posts about what makes a good pick. In each post I’ll check how good picks and bad picks fare in a given feature.

Just two notes before beginning. First, I’ll only consider players picked from the 2nd cycle on, because the rule about scout score was different in the 1st cycle, so the criterion to judge whether a pick was good or not was different. Starting from the 2nd cycle, the criterion is simple: did he score more than 8 points?

…At least, it is simple when you consider things ex post. I mean, one could argue that some players that will never reach 8 points were good picks when they were picked, because they had the potential to score many points (this, of course, was the second note).

The first feature I’ll consider is the player’s age when he was picked.

I’ll consider the 30 players with the best predicted score (AKA “Good Picks”) and compare them to the 18 players with a predicted score of less than 8 (AKA “Bad Picks”). See the appendix for the names of these players.

The average age of the Good Picks is 20.5 years. The average age of bad picks is 25.6 years.

Among the Good Picks, only Debuchy was picked when he was older than 25.6. Among the Bad Picks, no player were picked when he was younger than 20.5; the younger Bad Pick was Jucilei, at 22.55.

Consider that many players that (a) were young when they were picked and that (b) will be bad picks in the end are still too young for the prediction formula to claim that they have no hope anymore. This said… it looks like one should think twice before picking a player who is 24 or older!

Appendix

30 best picks: right now they are (from best to “less best”) Schurrle (58 points), Gotze, Giroud, David Luiz, Pogba, Paulinho, Rojo, Depay, Lucas Moura, Blind, Alba, Luiz Gustavo, Varane, Reus, Bernard, Sterling, Griezmann, Koke, Barkley, Debuchy, Draxler, Henderson, Chamberlain, De Sciglio, Koscielny, Lamela, Smalling, Clasie, Digne, Willems (37 points).

Players with a predicted score of 7 or less (from worst to “less worst”): Antonini, Jose Enrique, Mulder, Scocco, Valero, Bruno Cortes, Molinaro, N’Zogbia, Ansaldi, Forlin, Marchesin, Michu, Antonelli, Garcia, Matri, Jadson, Jucilei, Tomkins.

World Cup-only scores

What would be the players’ scores if only World Cup matches were counted? Here is the answer. “Difference” is compared to the ranking based on the official score.

Among the players who are in the top positions by World Cup score, the ones that feel more out of place are maybe Boateng, Blind and Wijnaldum.

Everybody else has 0 points. Among them, the ones who lose most places are:

Walcott -89
Alexandre Pato -84
Rossi -84
Lucas Moura -80
Arbeloa -79
Young -73
Negredo -69
Reus -69
Bonucci -68
Cazorla -68

Maybe a better way to check the difference between the official score and the World Cup-only one is multiplying the latter by 9 (the whole of the players scored 4,548 points, 507 of them at the WC, and 4,548/507 is 8.97). I’ve removed all the players who have scored 0 official points.

German players gain places, because in both World Cups Germany fielded young players, played seven matches, scored a lot of goals.

Among the players with the worst difference there are:

  • Players whose national team got eliminated early in Brazil: Cazorla, Bonucci.
  • Players who blossomed, flourished and somehow faded in the time between the two World Cups: Arbeloa, Lucas Moura, Negredo, Young; Pato did it before both WC 2010 and WC 2014.
  • Players who didn’t play in Brazil because of injuries: Walcott, Rossi, Montolivo, Reus.
  • Post-WC drama

But seriously, it’s probably more interesting to check which players had their predicted score change more after the September matches (as compared to the day after the World Cup final). I.e. the players whose future looks brighter/darker in the after-World Cup reboot.

    Change, change, change

Every time I promise to myself that I won’t care about monthly changes in the rankings… and every time I care. But this time there’s a reason – they are quite interesting:

    • 1st picking cycle: Daniele is again on top, leapfrogging Michael H.
    • 2nd picking cycle: in the predicted ranking, I’m now on top, ahead of Michael H.
    • 3rd picking cycle: Sid Debgupta is now on top instead of Mpfat.

    An all-FS national team

That for the first time all the starters in a national team were players picked in Fantasy Scout is quite impressive. The more so if you consider that the national team was the world champions in their first official match after the World Cup! (Germany vs. Scotland)

    Scoring rules and predictions

The old scoring rules cause the current ranking being close to the predicted final ranking since the beginning: e.g. in 2010 three scouts were among the top five in both rankings. This is quite obvious, since there’s no penalty for picking more players.

The new scoring rules seem to cause the predicted ranking being less subject to swinging. E.g. in the first year after the end of the 2nd cycle, nobody gained or lost more than 4 places; and the next year the max swing was 3 places. Compare it with the 1st cycle: in the first year after its end, Tom went from 23th to 3rd, Saintjust from 21st to 10th, Jesus from 22th to 12th; the next year, Saintjust was back in the bottom places – he was 20th. Even considering that in the 2nd cycle there were 17 scouts vs. the 24 scouts of the 1st cycle, the difference stands out.

It Was a Dark and Stormy Cycle, Chapter III

    August 2014

There are similarities and dissimilarities between the situation at the end of the 3rd picking cycle and the one at the end of the previous cycle.

Here too, Alessandro is absent and Alberto picked too few players to frighten me. Here too, I started in a good position: second, not too distant from the leader (less than 40 points between Abubakr and me).

But I’m afraid that this cycle is the inverse of the previous one in an important feature: here I picked more players than Daniele, and he picked better players. E.g. his top player, Pogba, has 20 more points than mine, Koke (Pogba is also the best player in the whole cycle). So I’m afraid that the inverse of what happened in the 2nd cycle will happen here: my score will take a nosedive, while Daniele will get better and better. Being 110 points ahead is not enough…

The Story of My Misfortunes, Chapter II

After the first picking cycle, it’s time to review the second.

    August 2012

Maybe this will be better than the 1st picking cycle? I’m starting in the fourth place, and maybe the scouts above me are there because they have more players, not because they have better players. E.g. nobody has a 60-pointer like Goetze… So my hope is that some of their players will fail, bringing down their score. But of course recovering the 80 points that divide me from Michael H. is very, very hard.

Unfortunately Daniele is one of the scouts above me! But he’s the weaker of the bunch, with his best player (Leandro Damiao) getting just 44 points…

As of the other rivalry, Alessandro didn’t pick this time, and Alberto picked few players. So he is last, 150 points below me.

    August 2013

Yay! I’m the scout whose score has improved more (thanks mainly to David “Sideshow Bob” Luiz). As an effect, I’m now third. And most importantly… I’ve surpassed Daniele!

Now I can’t help dreaming about the top place… I’m just 20 points below Michael H., whose score is a bit worse than last year (Martin disappeared from the radar and lost 22 points). But I’m still below, and there’s also Binder. His gain has been almost as good as mine (+52 vs. +55), and in Lucas Moura he has the best player of the cycle. It will be hard to beat both Michael H. and Binder.

I’m two hundred points above Alberto.

    August 2014

I’ve gained one more place, so now I’m second. 🙂 As a matter of fact I gained 25 points, while Binder practically stood still: for every Luiz Gustavo +19 he had a Lucas Moura -14.

Believe it or not, I still haven’t told you the best news. Here it is: Daniele is the scout who lost most points this term: 48, half of them being Leandro Damiao getting obliterated. So now I’m 90 points above Daniele. And more than 200 points above Alberto, of course. This is happiness.

But beating Michael H. … that is a very hard nut to crack. I managed to exactly match him this time, but not to recover anything: my score improved by +25 like his, thanks to the top player (Goetze) getting +27 or 28 points like his (Giroud). So they are still twenty points. (Also, I am not ruling out Binder at all!)

Fantasy Scout and fantasy dynasty leagues

Yesterday for the first time I learnt about fantasy dynasty leagues in American football, baseball, hockey. So, even though they predates Fantasy Scout, they haven’t influenced it.

I was aware of the concept of keeping players from the previous season in a fantasy league, though, because it was a rule in many Italian fantasy football leagues. But of course, for a football player, debuting in Serie A doesn’t mean debuting as a pro (except for rare cases), and not playing in Serie A anymore doesn’t always mean retiring; and of course this applies to any single national football league, not just to Serie A. Basically, Fantasy Scout rules were designed as a a way to make a really meaningful dynasty league possible for (non-American) football despite the fact that in it there are many major leagues.

The rules ended up creating a game that is different from a dynasty league in some important features, though. Mainly:

    • A dinasty league is more fun than Fantasy Scout, because in the former you have weekly results and yearly verdicts.
    • Only Fantasy Scout really rewards being the very first person to believe in a player (not even developmental dynasty leagues do it, as far as I know).
